5 Rules to Follow for a Breathable Coworking Space

coworking space in an office

Whenever you share a working environment with someone, you have to be aware that there are some rules (be they unspoked or clearly stated) that you should follow if you want to work in a positive and breathable coworking space. Let’s say that the ones which are written down are more easy to follow. What about those that no one talks about yet everyone expects the rest to respect? Today, we are going to look at 5 such rules that you should remember if you are going to share a working space with other people.

5 Rules for a Coworking Space

1. Don’t Talk Loudly on the Phone

If you are surrounded by coworkers, even if they have their headphones on, you should never talk loudly on the phone. You will interrupt their concentration and distract them from work. Sometimes, you might not even realize that you’re talking loudly, so just to be on the safe side, you should avoid answering your phone in a shared area. Unless the phone call is really urgent, it can wait until you won’t be distracting anybody.

2. Clean Up After Yourself

In a coworking space, everybody has to tend to their own mess. Don’t expect other people to clean after you, because that wouldn’t be at all fair. If you can afford to have a messy desk because it is all yours, other people might want to use the common space and realize that they can’t because of the mess you left behind. Everything will run smoothly if you’re simply careful not to leave any trace after you’ve used a certain room.

3. Don’t Take Away Other People’s Things

Even if you forgot your stapler and need one as soon as possible, you should never simply take one that you find on a coworker’s desk or simply lying around. Always ask if you can borrow things. Don’t just assume that if they are in your proximity, you are entitled to them.

4. Don’t Interrupt People All the Time

Even if you’re taking a break or you don’t have that many things to attend to that day, it doesn’t mean that the rest of your coworkers are in the same situation. No one wants somebody talking to them and interrupting them constantly when they’re trying to work. So if you don’t have something else to do, at least find an activity that doesn’t distract your coworkers.

5. Keep It Friendly

You don’t have to become best friends with the people you work with. However, if you have to see them and interact with them every single day, you should make an effort to be friendly and get to know them better. If your company is organizing a fun event, try to attend it. Furthermore, work on nurturing your relationship with your coworkers. This will make coming to work on a Monday morning much more pleasurable.

These are only a few of the rules you should apply to a coworking space, but they are definitely some of the most important. Keep them in mind every day and you will make the best of your work experience!
