All of us experience failure at least once in our lives. Failure is part of the human experience, and we have to learn to embrace it as such. This can be easier said than done, especially when you fail constantly. What happens when failure seems to follow you everywhere and you’re desperately looking for a way to win? Scott Adams seems to have the answer. His book, How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life, is all about his struggles with failure and how he managed to overcome it. Let’s see what this book is all about and what are the lessons that it can teach you!

I find it helpful to see the world as a slot machine that doesn’t ask you to put money in. All it asks is your time, focus, and energy to pull the handle over and over. – Scott Adams

How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life

Who Is Scott Adams?

The first relevant piece of information you should know before reading this book is who its author is. That’s because the answer to this question informs the entire story you’re about to read. While Scott Adams is now famous for his comic strip Dilbert, not to mention other works of business, satire, and so on, he wasn’t always this lucky. In fact, he was quite the unlucky person. He tried and failed many times before reaching the place he’s in now, which is why he wrote this book in which he details all of his struggles and what he’s learned from them.

Win Big by Using Systems

Instead of establishing goals, Adams advises people to go with systems instead. Why? Because in the case of goals, until you accomplish them, it’s like you’re constantly failing. Then, after you accomplish them, you lose your purpose. If you focus on implementing a system and making sure you follow it, you’re more likely to win big. Each time you apply your system, you’re going to feel like a success, which is going to keep you happy and motivated.

Don’t Focus on Passion, but on Energy

Everyone keeps telling you to follow your passions, because they will make you successful. Adams says this is not actually true. In fact, it is success that leads to passion, not the other way around. So, instead of focusing on passion, you should focus on activities that fill you with energy. From exercising and eating healthy, to doing small things that help you learn something new, there are multiple ways in which you can motivate yourself and make sure you don’t give up early.

Learn Several Small Things to Win Big

Winning big doesn’t mean you have to be excellent at just one thing. Adams has a different understanding of what this means. He believes that knowing several things, even if you don’t master them, can help you become excellent. For instance, providing himself as an example, Adams is not ashamed to admit that he’s not an amazing drawer or an amazing cartoonist. Still, he is aware of the fact that these two skills combined have helped him reach the top.

If you’re interested in even more surprising ways in which to win big, make sure you read Scott Adams’ book How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life.
