3 Hidden Time Wasters You Should Avoid at Work

If you spend 8 hours a day at work, but you still feel like you don’t have enough time to accomplish everything you want, it might be because you’re wasting time without even realizing it. While we sometimes consciously procrastinate and are aware of how time flies by, other times, we do things that we’re so accustomed to that we don’t even realize are a waste of our time. Today, we’re going to talk about 3 time wasters at work and how to avoid them.

The next time someone asks you for a favor, be realistic about whether you have the time to help him/her or not. If the answer is no, don’t be afraid to decline.

3 Workplace Time Wasters to Avoid

1. Browsing Social Media

This is probably one of the most common time wasters nowadays, and it’s one that many people have no idea how much it decreases their productivity. Sometimes, we check social media without being aware that we’re doing it. At the same time, we might think there’s nothing wrong with browsing Facebook for a couple of minutes, and then end up getting distracted by a funny video or an interesting article, only to realize that we’ve already spent 20 minutes doing that instead of working.

If you want to avoid wasting time because of social media, we advise you to turn off the devices you normally use to access it. If that’s impossible, at least log out from the respective apps in order to avoid temptation. Then, you can reward yourself for your efforts by spending some time on social media during your lunch break.

2. Sending and Answering Emails

Believe it or not, people are wasting a lot of time sending and replying to emails, when they could be using that time for something else. It’s true that emails are a great way to communicate with people, but it can also be a really time-consuming one. Especially when it comes to internal emails. Instead of relying on emails to say something to the person working in the office next to you, you could call them. You could also use some form of instant messaging, such as Skype, which will save you some time.

Another important thing about work emails is prioritizing. Know which ones you should answer right away and which ones can wait. Moreover, don’t check your email constantly if you don’t want to fall into the same trap as with social media.

3. Helping Other People

There’s nothing wrong with helping a coworker. Just as long as this won’t decrease your productivity or make you miss any deadlines. Sometimes, we tend to spend too much time taking care of other people’s problems. Then, we end up forgetting about our own tasks. The next time someone asks you for a favor, be realistic about whether you have the time to help him/her or not. If the answer is no, don’t be afraid to decline. It’s perfectly fine to put yourself first. Consider what you have to do before even thinking about helping someone else with their work.

These are only a couple of workplace time wasters examples that can make you become less productive, but they’re definitely some of the most pertinent ones. Learn to avoid them, and you’ll notice how both the quality and the quantity of your work will increase.
