Not all work places are filled with understanding and supportive bosses, friendly and inspiring co-workers, and an overall great atmosphere. There are people who are trapped in an unnaturally toxic work environment, and sometimes they don’t even realize it. If you think you might be one of them, then you will like what we have prepared for you today. We want to help you out, so we created a list of 5 signs that your work environment is toxic. If many of these sound familiar, then it might be time for a change.

Signs of a Toxic Work Environment

1. Lack of Communication

As with all things in life, communication should be a really important part of the work environment. If you don’t communicate with your team, there’s no way you can successfully work together and accomplish great things. Image how many things can go wrong because of lack of communication. Maybe you don’t receive honest feedback and you can’t improve your skills, or people don’t give you the exact details of a project and it sets both you and the team back. Regardless of the situation, lack of communication is one of the most important signs that you are in a toxic work environment.

2. Poor Leadership

A great leadership can go a long way in turning a toxic work environment in a really prosperous and inspiring one. But if the leader of your team only acts according to his or her own needs, then you know the atmosphere is toxic. These types of leaders are usually really condescending towards other employees, and they fail to encourage growth and motivation. If you feel trapped in such a work environment, it is time for you to get out.

3. Negativity

Ideally, going to work should be something that brings you satisfaction and that you enjoy doing. Of course, not all days are great even in the best of jobs. But overall, going to work should not make you feel nervous, uncomfortable, or anxious. No matter how many financial benefits you have, if your work puts you on the edge psychologically, it is a clear sign that you are in a toxic work environment, and that you should look for another job that makes you feel satisfied and fulfilled.

4. Competition over Collaboration

This issue goes hand in hand with the lack of communication at the work place. If you do not feel like you are part of a team, this will encourage constant competition between you and your coworkers. We’re not saying that competition cannot be a beneficial thing as well. But this only applies if you keep it in small doses. If you find yourself in a work environment where people encourage you to compete with your colleagues instead of collaborating with them for the benefit of the company, then you should think if that is the right place for you or not.

5. Negative Health Effects

Typically, when you go home from work, you should be able to relax and allow yourself some personal time. You shouldn’t stress about an urgent work problem. Of course, you can’t always avoid this, but if it happens daily, it might be a sign that the toxic work environment you’re in is affecting your personal life and health. From physical symptoms such as lack of sleep or migraines, to psychological symptoms such as panic attacks or depression, remember that no work environment should make you feel that way.

These are just some of the main signs that you are part of a toxic work environment. But they should be enough for you to decide to change jobs. Search for something that will bring you positivity and professional growth instead.
