Top Management Styles & How to Use them to Boost Your Business

What makes a good manager? Is it their management styles, people skills, outspoken personality or leadership qualities? As it turns out, most studies show that a combination of all these factors, as well as, a mix of all the management styles, is what makes a truly fantastic manager.

There are six main management styles which you need to be aware of.

1. The Directive or Coercive Management Style

This particular style has as a primary objective the idea of getting your employees to do what you tell them and how you tell them to do it, no questions asked. This type of manager will always control his or her employees very strictly, by sitting with them in the same office or compel them to use work and time trackers. They also motivate the people working for them by extreme discipline and even threats.

The coercive style of management will help you boost your business if and when you are going through a crisis and when deviations in the workplace are becoming risky.

2. The Authoritative or Visionary Management Style

When using this particular one out of all the management styles, it means that you are trying to find and provide direction and vision in the long term for all your employees. You need to motivate the people working for you by being firm but fair, giving them feedback on how they performed their tasks, and inspire them via persuasion.

You can use this management style to improve your business when there is a definite need for a direction and when you are a credible leader.

3. The Affiliative Management Style

This type of manager wants to create and deliver harmony in his company. He always puts people first before the tasks themselves. He also tries to avoid any conflicts that might appear and strives to keep everyone happy.

You can use it to provide a much-needed boost to your business because it is based on counseling and helping others rather than on pushing them to do something. However, you must remember that it is only effective when you combine it with other management styles.

4. The Participative or Democratic Management Style

This is the manager who believes everyone has something to say or to add and that all the input counts. He or she also encourages all the persons working in the company to participate in the decision making, and he or she rewards the team effort.

This management style is mostly useful when you have to coordinate the employees. It also works when there is a crisis, and you have no time to organize a meeting, and when you notice a lack of competency all around.

5. The Pacesetting Management Style

The pacesetting style strives to accomplish tasks only by the highest standards of excellence. This type of leader is also called the ‘do it myself’ manager. He or she tends to take on most of the task by themselves and then hopes or expects the other employees to follow the example.

It will be effective in boosting your business when you have managing experts that can lead in this way. Another situation is when there is little coordination required or when the people who work for the company are already motivated and highly competent.

6. The Coaching Management Style

This type of manager’s leadership style focuses more on creating personal and professional plans for his employees. The manager needs to motivate everyone by creating opportunities when it comes to their professional development.

You will see its benefits if there are skills which need to be developed, or if your employees are already motivated and in need of development.

The fascinating thing about all these management styles is that there is no right and wrong. There isn’t even a best or worst one. Therefore, all you need to do is find out which one suits you best and work on it.
