The phrase improvise, adapt, overcome has become the unofficial mantra of the United States Marine Corps. That is because sometimes they didn’t have the necessary tools to do their job properly. That’s when members had to be able to improvise whatever they could and adapt to different situations in order to overcome the obstacles ahead. Even if this is where the phrase originates, it is clear that we can apply it to more than one aspect of our daily lives. Today, we are going to look at how this mantra can help you grow as a person.

Improvise, Adapt, Overcome: A Mantra to Help You Grow

The mantra improvise, adapt, overcome is all about resilience. What is resilience? Resilience is our ability to adapt when we confront ourselves with difficult situations, threats, traumas, and so on. Furthermore, it means we can overcome these difficulties in the end. We’re sure everybody had to face at some point or another a negative situation. Whether it was something more serious like the loss of a loved one, or less intense such as having a bad day at work.

Even if we can never prepare for the unexpected, it helps to have an understanding of how the unexpected can hit. Expect the unexpected might sound a bit impossible. However, learning to quickly accept that things are not going to work your way is a huge step in the right direction. Because most often than not, we have to learn how to adapt fast and improvise on the spot.

Since there is no way of stopping unexpected situations, what makes the biggest difference is how you deal with them. You can be the person who allows their life to be affected by them and gets stuck when trying to move past the entire thing. Or you can be the person who regards them as life lessons that can help you grow and develop.

Unfortunately, more people are a part of the first category. They need practice and resilience before they can manage to adopt this mantra of improvise, adapt, overcome. As we’ve mentioned before, the key to approaching difficult situations from the perspective of this mantra is to build resilience. There are many great benefits of being resilient. That’s why it is worth the effort to try and cultivate this characteristic.

Once you build resilience, you can more easily train your mind to react fast to unexpected situations. Furthermore, you can come up with a plan B as soon as possible. After all, this is what this mantra is all about. It is the ability to make the best of what you have, even if it is not optimal.

It is easier to deal with success than it is to deal with failure, that’s for sure. But it is our ability to react to failure and overcome it that shows the greatest resilience and character. It is what tells you and the people around you that you have what it takes to make your dreams come true.
