1. Prepare Thoroughly
One of the most important negotiation techniques you should keep in mind is preparing yourself thoroughly. Make sure you know every single fact related to the negotiation, the person you’re negotiating with and what they want, and so on. You don’t want to forget anything, since it can make a great difference in the actual negotiation. If you fail to prepare, you’re more likely to overlook certain factors or make concessions that aren’t necessary.
2. Rehearse the Negotiation
Oftentimes, it’s difficult to visualize what we’ve prepared in our heads or imagine how it would all play out in person. Which is why a really good idea would be to rehearse the entire negotiation beforehand. Ask a friend to be the party you’re supposed to negotiate with. Even if you could do this by yourself, you won’t get a clear sense of how everything sounds and looks unless there’s someone else standing in front of you, playing the role of the second party.
3. Come up with a Plan B
In any kind of situation involving negotiation, you have to come up with a plan B as well, in case the first one fails. You don’t want to have to think about it in the moment, after you see that your initial proposition doesn’t appeal to the other party. This will show that you’re unprepared. Moreover, it might also cause you to make hasty decisions that could damage the success of the negotiation. Apart from identifying your own plan B, you should also try to anticipate what the other person’s plan B could be. That way, you’ll be more prepared to deal with whatever the negotiation throws at you.
4. Try Not to Show Weakness
Whenever you’re stating your claims in a negotiation, never show signs that you’re not entirely sure of what you want or that you don’t know exactly what you’re talking about. Any sign of weakness will be interpreted by the other person as an opportunity to come up with an alternative to your proposition, alternative that will benefit them better. Do your best to look confident and speak confidently, and don’t shy away from eye contact. Your attitude can work wonders for the success of the negotiation.
