A letter of intent can sometimes tell more about the potential employee than the resume itself. And some recruiters rely their decision mostly on this. 1. Read the Announcement Carefully
Most of the time, the employer will specify clear instructions in the announcement regarding the letter of intent. They should include what do they expect to find in the document, as well as other details you need. That’s why you should read carefully the text. If there is anything unclear, it would be a good idea to make a phone call to the company.
2. Make It Clear Who You’re Writing to
Besides knowing how to write a letter of intent, it’s important to know who you’re writing to as well. If you’re writing to an entire team, make it clear and be specific. People will be impressed that you know their names and you did your homework.
3. Make a Draft
One of the most common mistakes when it comes to writing such a letter is not making a draft. Many people skim through the requirements, fill in the information and that’s it. Instead of doing this, you should consider another approach: start by writing down all your accomplishments, experience, things that would put you in a good light. Then, select from there what you need and include them in the draft.
4. Make a Checklist
Go through the following checklist. Make sure that you have all the information at hand. When you’re done writing, check it again to see if you haven’t skipped anything.
- Date – formatted to the left margin;
- Recipient name and address – look them up if you don’t know them;
- Subject line – be clear and concise;
- Greeting – never use an informal greeting;
- Summary – summarize in a sentence why are you writing them;
- Body – give details about the project you’re interested in, your goals, past experiences, etc. Remember to keep a formal and professional tone;
- Closing – write a formal closing and sign the letter.
Even if you wrote a great letter, imagine the person who is reading it coming upon a spelling mistake. That would compromise your chances a lot. As such, proofread the entire document twice to make sure it’s okay. At the same time, check the information you provided again. If you notice a sentence sounds odd, now is the time to change it.
6. Submit It as Requested
Once again, refer to the original announcement and see how the company wants to receive the letter. Follow the instruction precisely. Don’t send it via email if they request it through the post, for example.
