How to Manipulate People: 5 Strategies

String puppet being manipulated

It seems that everybody is talking about manipulation these days. Whether it’s politics, work or religion, people try to manipulate each other. Today we are presenting you some of the most commonly used strategies on how to manipulate people.

How to Manipulate People without Them Knowing

1. Ask for Something Unreasonable First

This method has been tested various times and it’s quite effective. If you want to manipulate a person, it’s a good idea to ask them something unreasonable first. The person will most likely reject you, and after that you can ask for the thing you initially wanted. With this psychological trick, the second request would sound more appealing than the first one, so the chances for you to get what you want will grow.

2. Make them Feel Fear, then Relief

The strategy on how to manipulate people is another tested one. Make the person fear the worst case scenario, then make them relieved and happy enough to give you what you want. For example, if you borrowed your friends’ car and want to do it again, use this trick.

Tell them there was an awful noise coming from the car and you got scared. This is how you make them fear the worst. Then tell them it was from the radio, luckily. When they laugh it off, ask if you could borrow it again.

3. Make Them Feel Guilty

This trick on how to manipulate people works best if the person is already prone to feeling guilty. Remind them of all the good things you need for them. You can also show them how your life would be negatively influenced if they don’t help you with what you want.

4. Bribe People

Bribing does not necessarily mean giving money. It can also mean doing a favor or offering people something they want. In this case, it’s important to see what the other person wants: a book from you, a ride somewhere, etc. The more they want it, the more likely you are to get what you want in exchange.

5. Be a Victim

This is yet another strategy you can use. Don’t overdo it, otherwise, it will not be that effective though. When the person rejects you, say things like “I don’t know what I do wrong” or “I don’t know why these things keep happening to me”. Try to seem acceptant of the situation. For example, if they don’t want to give you a ride, just say “Okay, then I’ll just walk, it’s good for my health”.

The strategies here can be mean if used with the purpose of hurting people. However, it’s a good thing to be aware of them so that you can identify whenever somebody is trying to manipulate you. Even so, the person will not admit to using them when you ask them to.

Manipulating people is not a good thing to do. However, it is a reality taking place every day. Pay attention to the strategies on how to manipulate people described above and don’t fall for them next time someone tries to do it to you.
