In a culture that focuses on money, it’s hard to imagine an existence where the financial aspect doesn’t exist. However, there have been some cases of people who lived like that, either for a short period of time or on a long one. Today we are going to have a look at a couple of tips on how to live without money and still thrive.

How to Live without Money 101

1. Make Your Plan

Before dramatically changing your lifestyle, you should have your own plan. Think about what needs you have, and think about your family as well if there are other people who depend on you. If you have serious issues or payments, such as medical bills or young children in the family, this lifestyle may not be suitable for you.

2. Provide Accommodation

Living off the grid is a great idea. It’s best to find a home that works with wind, solar, or other renewable sources of energy. You can even build yourself one, but it might be quite costly. For water, use a well or a local stream. A composting toilet is also a great idea to save water while helping the environment and making manure for your garden. A good idea is to find similar communities.

3. Find Food

Some people have been traveling without any money for a short period of time. There are various ways in which you can find or grow food for free:

  • Dumpster diving – this is a popular solution among the communities living without money; just make sure that the food you find is still good for eating, even if it’s past the sell by date.
  • Asking restaurants and people – luckily, many restaurants give away food when they have leftovers from lunch or dinner, so you can ask them for it. Alternatively, if you’re hitchhiking from town to town in a foreign country, you can also ask people by going from door to door.
  • Growing your own – start up your own garden and grow food for your needs. If you find water for free, you can have your own vegetables and fruits. Plus, they’re more natural and healthy.

4. Start Bartering

When learning how to live without money, bartering is the best option you have. Do some serious cleaning around your house and decide what items you don’t need. Then, trade them for other things you might find useful in your new lifestyle. You can also barter skills, for instance, you can ask someone to teach you how to sew your own clothes, how to plant various fruits and vegetables, etc.

5. Join a Community

There are various communities dedicated to living without money all over the world. You can do some research or even visit them to learn more about this lifestyle. Some examples are an Irish community, the Lasqueti in Canada, as well as other tribal communities.

The tips above on how to live without money are just a couple of guidelines to help you start this lifestyle. However, think well if you are willing to do all these efforts and quit the comfort you had until now.
