If you want your team to perform exemplary, you’re going to have to make sure that everyone knows what their responsibilities are, and that they’re capable of going through with them. Basically, everyone in the team assumes a certain role, and this is what makes the team a coherent whole. According to Dr. Meredith Belbin, there are 9 team roles in each team, divided into three groups: people oriented, action oriented, and thought oriented. The more you know and understand your role, the more you can improve the team. Today, we’re going to go through Belbin’s team roles and tell you what they entail.

Belbin’s Team Roles: The Basics

#People Oriented

1. Team Worker

Team workers take care of everybody else, making sure the team gets along. They solve conflicts, they’re diplomatic, and they help the team stick together. At times, they can be indecisive, precisely because they’re trying to look at all sides of a conflict or of any other type of situation.

2. Coordinator

Also called chairmen, coordinators lead the team towards their collective goal. They’re able to understand what each person is good at, and to provide him or her with relevant tasks. They know how to listen, and they’re usually calm, but they might sometimes delegate things they were supposed to do.

3. Resource Investigator

These curious and innovative people negotiate with outside sources, develop contacts, and so on. Thus, they must be extroverts, and be able to persuade people. Too much optimism can sometimes be a problem with them.

#Action Oriented Roles

4. Implementer

Implementers make things happen. They’re organized, they devise action plans, and they get things done. On the other hand, they can also be inflexible at times, and fail to see other points of view.

5. Shaper

People who challenge the rest of the team, stimulate others, don’t take anything for granted, and love to come up with new and interesting ideas are shapers. They’re fierce and trust that the team can overcome obstacles. At the same time, they might make others feel bad by being too argumentative.

6. Completer-Finisher

As the name suggests, these people check the team’s projects and make sure everything has been done to the letter. They also make sure the team respects deadlines, they’re perfectionists, and conscientious. Sometimes, they tend to worry too much and become anxious.

#Thought Oriented Roles

7. Monitor-Evaluator

These people evaluate ideas by carefully weighing in all the pros and cons. Furthermore, they’re critical thinkers who are objective and strategic. Because of that, some people might think they lack emotions.

8. Plant

Plants are the people who come up with the best and most innovative ideas. More often than not, they work better alone. Thus, they’re not comfortable communicating with other people. Moreover, they don’t handle criticism well.

9. Specialist

Finally, specialists have impressive skills that make them experts. They focus on a particular field of expertise, but they know everything about it. This also makes their contribution somewhat limited. Plus, they sometimes tend to miss the bigger picture.
